Speleology: What is it?

Speleology (caving) is the science - sport that deals with the exploration, study, conservation and teaching of all the aspects relative to caves and caverns. This includes dozens of scientific disciplines, such as topography, geology, hydrology, biology, anthropology, arqueology, photography and many others.

In Costa Rica (CR), most of the cavers are people that study several of those disciplines, but not specialized Scientifics.

A cave is any cavity (on the ground or on a cliff) large enough for a human to fit in and must also have a section of full darkness. There are hundreds of caves in Costa Rica, but only a few are known to a few Costa Ricans ("ticos"). The best known are those of Barra Honda National Park and the ones at Venado, San Carlos area. The " Anthros C.R Group" (grotto), in all its activities, applies the NSS slogan: " you shall take nothing but photos, kill nothing but time and leave nothing but foot-steps" (the least noticeable!)"
